On Property
Property; a general term for rules governing access to and control of resources. These rules are sometimes disputed, in regard to their shape and application, because resources are of kinds; material and human.
Historically the lines of usage of such resources can be blurry, attempts have been made to philosophically justify all kinds possible. The term has existed for years, creating boundaries, political and personal. It influences institutions, social conventions and personal life. It gives one the power of possession and sometimes stems from insecurities. The owner can pick and choose, call something as theirs, be it land, gold or people. Sometimes people are not bothered about who owns how much, going through the day is what gives meaning and having less control over the world is fine. They are at the disposal of others. Their boundaries are set and the legalities help in their justification.
Ownership is one such concept that sets these boundaries, through tools of submission of one under the other. Hierarchical structures, barriers both physical and mental are decided by this act of owning. It is potentially a triad of reality, a mere conception of the mind or both.
Modern philosophical discussions focus mostly on the issue of the justification of ownership rights. With this project I question the already set notions around ownership, with three different lenses; social conventions, world building and myself. I will be using the term “property” as a metaphor to touch upon the same.
